Savage head retorque

I just bought a 97 savage and noticed the manual recommends a head retorque about every 4000 miles. Is this really necessary? It looks like the dealer retorqued the head at the 600 mile service.

Another question: Is the recommended 4000 mile valve adjustment interval real or can I stretch this out a bit?
